Have you ever dreamt of being a pilot and visiting foreign countries at your leisure? Here is your chance to play the part of a pilot and put your map skills to the test. You will be reading latitude and longitude, telling time from country to country, and creating a flight plan that will take you across 6 continents and 5 cities besides your hometown. I hope you enjoy your trip.

You will be working with a co-pilot to go on an adventure that will take you from an airport near your hometown, and end in Sydney, Australia. Inbetween these two cities you will go to 4 other cities of your choice, each on a different continent. In order to make the trip you will locate and label each city on a map using latitude and longitude. Then you will prepare a flight itinerary showing arrival and departure times (Keeping in mind time zones.)in each city. After the itinerary is complete you will estimate the distance travelled between the cities. Knowing where the cities are located will allow you to show a proposed flight path labelling each country that you will fly over (So you can get permission to use their airspace.). Once you have filed you flight plan with the MBAA (Mr. Britsch Aviation Association), you will go to a flight plan simulator, input the airport codes (3 letter abbreviation for the city airports you will be using) for the cities you are travelling to and it will show you a true path you should travel. Then finally you will compare your flight plan and the plan made by the simulator and answer a few questions regarding your trip plans.

Choose, locate and label on a blank worldmap the airport you will be starting your adventure in, as well as 4 cities you will be stopping to visit on your way to Sydney, Australia. Beside each city should be the country it belongs to and the cities longitude and latitude coordinates.
Select a starting time and prepare a trip itinerary estimating the distance between each leg of your flight, city name, country name, time in flight (Assume your plane flies at an average speed of 250 MPH.), current local time for each city (Check time zones), and 2 items of interest that brought you to the city.
On blank map, plot the cities you will travel to and connect the dots showing a proposed flight path. After connecting the cities apply the following labels: Countries flown over, Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Artic Circle, Antarctic Circle, Prime Meridian, 180 degree meridian, the 7 continents, the 4 oceans, and a compass rose. *****USE A RED PEN TO SHOW THE FLIGHT PATH*****
Go to the flight plan simulator and figure out the airport codes of the cities you have selected (Use the metropolitan airport if possible) and enter each city you plan to visit. The simulator will compile a proposed flight path just as you did. Print the simulators plan and compare it to yours.
Write a brief summary of the differences. Why do you think the computer selected the path it did? Which is correct?

You will be evaluated using a rubric. Click here to go the Webquest rubric. Then click print to print off a copy of the rubric. Write your name and co-pilots name on the paper and turn it in with all of the appropriate papers. If there is problem with the cooperation between co-pilots please inform me of the problem ASAP. I will be watching your progress and each person will be graded appropriately, keeping in mind the amount of work done by each person.

Enjoy the trip to your various cities. I hope you find some interesting things to see and people to meet. Make sure to use your map skills accurately. Entering the wrong longitude and latitude could get you lost. Keeping track of time from time zone to time zone can insure your safe arrival at each airport. Make sure your flight path is labeled properly, I would hate see you create a military disturbance above a country you did not have permission to fly over. Good Luck!
